About Turrialba
Turrialba is a charming little town in the lush and beautiful Central Valley in Cartago province. Famous for being a white water rafting hotspot, this town lies 53 km east of the capital city San Jose and is an excellent place to tour the pre-Columbian ruins at Guayabo, or the rarely visited but lovely Parque Nacional Volcan Turrialba.

Turrialba is a quiet town with charming street corners and beautiful surrounding sceneries is among the few places in Costa Rica with direct access to a volcano’s crater. From the summit of the volcano, you can on a clear day, see the Irazu, Poas and Barva volcanoes in the distance. Among the most rarely visited national parks in Costa Rica, the Turrialba Volcano National Park is home of the active Turrialba Volcano, whose last major eruption occurred in 1866. The volcano itself is only 15 km northwest of town. However, it is safe to climb, and though the facilities at the park are rather meager, it is still a worthwhile trip.

If you are looking for adventure, try river rafting along the Rio Pacuare that is nearby. This river is famous throughout the world and is sometimes used as a training ground for world-class white water rafters and kayakers.

Nearby Turrialba is the Guayabo National Monument, which is a great place for those interested in history. Costa Rica’s only pre-Columbian site that is open to public access, these ruins provide a fantastic insight into what life 1000 BC to 1400 AD must have been like. If you are an avid naturalist also definitely visit the Center for Agronomy Research and Development, which is among the world’s top ranked tropical agriculture research centers. Spread over 2,000 acres, this facility is collects and conducts research on plants/trees that have been collected from all over the world.

Aside from the things to do around town, Turrialba is also famous for baseball. This is because Rawlings baseballs that are used in Major League games are manufactured in this tiny town.

Turrialba Campus
Our campus in Turrialba is located on the grounds of the world famous agricultural research center, CATIE. The grounds cover over 2000 acres and offer a wonderful learning environment The school building itself is a light gray turn of the century, plantation style single story house with a green tin roof. Located right next to the school are the botanical gardens through which students can walk around and enjoy the exotic flora of the tropics.  Since our campus in Turrialba is located on the grounds of CATIE its campus is truly the most extensive and impressive of any Spanish language school in Costa Rica.

The Standard four hour Language program is four complete hours of language a day. Class hours are from 8:00am to 10:00am and from 10:30am to 12:30pm. There is a half-hour break in the middle and classes are no larger than four students. Each week all will also have the option of participating in three different afternoon activities: Latin Dance and Cooking classes and one half-day excursion. The Intensive 4-hour + Private has the same group schedule in the morning, followed by two hours of private lessons Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday for a total of 28 class hours a week.

Classes begin every Monday of the year except on Costa Rican National holidays and the last week of the year. In the case of Monday holidays, classes will begin on the following Tuesday. The following Costa Rica Holidays are observed by the school; January 1st, April 11th, May 1st, July 25th, August 15th, September 15th and December 25th. The school is not closed on Holy Thursday or Good Friday. There are no refunds for missed days because of holidays.

Classes begin each Monday and last through Friday. During periods of peak enrollment, some students will be placed in afternoon sessions in order to preserve the optimum class size. In the event that we are unable to place you in a group class because of differing skill levels, you shall automatically be provided three hours of individual private lessons instead. If the following week a group class does become available, you will be switched back to the group classes.

Homestays at our Turrialba campus are with local Costa Rican families.  Every student will have a private room with a bathroom that they share, although some houses do have private baths as well. Weekly laundry service is provided along with two meals a day, breakfast and dinner and mostly all homestays are within a 15-minute walk from the school.
